Tonight I shot my first NBA game. The LA Lakers lost to the Orlando Magic 106-103, at the Amway Arena in Orlando. NBA games are an excellent experience. I felt all levels of personnel it takes to put on an NBA game contribute to making the ticket price well worth the price. Being able to photograph Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, along with the other great NBA players was something I hope I have the pleasure of doing again soon.
Being my first NBA game, I was a little cautious about being hit by stray basketballs, or flying bodies. It didn't take but 15 minutes of shooting and hanging out around warm-ups until I was hit by something. I was chatting with a fellow photographer, not paying attention to the activity on the court, and BOOM. A ball flew right into the side of my face. After collecting myself I couple seconds later, I look onto the court and Magic's Hedo Turkoglu projected a laugh and smile my way. I'll know better next time, look toward the court if you are on it.

Eloquence of Bristol
The New York Times' writer Dan Barry has filled in the gap in what last summer's photo internship at The Bristol Press seemed to have left in Connecticut. Mr. Barry has made me realize how special it was to be apart of Bristol's staff, independent of the papers' unfortunate passing or miraculous prolongation. Truth is, I may have only realized my appreciation for editor Bill Sarno, chief photographer Mike Orazzi, front desk clerk Margaret (for her last name escapes me) and the many others I interacted with daily until after hearing it from Mr. Barry. Maybe I needed this article to teach me a giant lesson on the importance of a community newspaper, and the people who piece it together day in and day out.
Mr. Sarno and I shared the same "dimly lighted newsroom" for a summer. I remember rummaging through the newsroom on one of those 96 degree Connecticut days looking for a spare light to put in the photo workroom that had but only two lamps, where eight would have properly lit the area Mike and I filed our photos every evening.
But Mr. Barry is right, amid the dark work space, the editors and writers in The Bristol Press newsroom are dedicated to the city the paper serves. Since 1871, the people of Bristol have read what is important to them - in The Press. I will always have a affinity with the city of Bristol and Central Connecticut, regardless of the paper's future.

Was it snow?...no, it's Florida
This morning I shot the UCF Air Force ROTC Detachment's changing of command ceremony. When I arrived at the ceremony grounds, which was the UCF Soccer Complex, it seemed like the grass was covered with light snow. It is was really just dew mixed with cold temperatures. I let my mind wonder a bit. Or I'm just getting ready for my trip to Western New York in a month, where I anticipate seeing a lot of snow. I wore my gloves in case I really needed them.

Eppy is on duty
After a lot of effort to get the "Eppy" video compressed and online, it is finally here. I wish the video was larger online, but that is part of the compression learning curve I have yet to reach. On the other hand, continuing my education into Final Cut was very accomplishing.
It was a great experience meeting and spending time with Eppy. Having met someone who spent 65 years of their life doing what they love was quite a lesson into devotion. I hope this video pays homage to the dedication, fervency and compassion Eppy has toward barbering, his customers and his life. With good fortune, I hope what I learned from Eppy can be applied to my own career. Please enjoy!

UCF season comes to an end...
Saturday was my last time shooting in Bright House Stadium as a UCF student. I suppose it wasn't the best game to be at as a photog or a fan. Placekicker Swayze Waters scored all 15 pointes for the visiting Blazers from U. of Alabama at Birmingham. The game ended 15-0, with almost no UCF offense from the two quarterbacks Rob Calabrese and Joe Weatherford. It is a shame there will be no C-USA Championship game this year at the bright house. UCF ended its seaon 4-8. I'm sure future assignments will bring me back. And as a soon-to-be UCF alum, I would be nice to see a strong program develop.

House Montage...
This is a montage I made for my visual communication class. It's of the people who live in my house, whether they pay rent or not, sleep there or not. They are all holding objects that I thought would match the minimalistic color scheme on their frame. Enjoy - it was a bunch of fun.

Eppy - The Barber
For the past week I've been working on a story about Eppy, a barber near Avalon in Orlando, Fla. He has been cutting hair for almost 64 years. He has cut hair in Orlando, New York and Puerto Rico, where he is from. These are some outtakes from the couple times I have photographed Eppy.
Expect more to come in the coming weeks...

Subway
I took a look back into my photos from my hockey trip back in March, and found this one I made in the New York City subway. I later found out that you can't take photos while waiting for the train. I thought it was worth bringing out from the borrows of the hard drive.

Florida Girls' Prep Golf Tourney...
Today I followed the Barron Collier girls' golf team in Davenport, Fla. at the FHSAA state tournament for a regional newspaper. Here are some of my outtakes, and there should be some more tomorrow...

Football extravaganza
This was a weekend full of football, I am beginning to love these weekends. Shooting Seminole County high school football on Friday, UCF football on Saturday, and then watch Bills football on Sunday with Amy and the crew. And I am eating more wings then ever before...

More UCF Equestrian
This is probably going to be my last post from the UCF Equestrian series. Probably a good idea to keep some in the wraps. The following are more of my favorites from shooting with Alisha and Hannah this past Thursday. Alisha is a member of the Hunt team, and Hannah is the club's advisor. Enjoy!

UCF Equestrian Part 2...
Second round of photos of the UCF Equestrian team.
This last one is just something abstract from hanging in the stables.

To The Barn
After a lot of planning, I have finally started shooting my idea to document members of the UCF Equestrian team with their horses in portrait format. Even though I've only shot one, Jane L., it has been great working with the members so far with planning the photo sessions. Expect a lot more posts! I am really excited to see this project pan out.
By the way, my secret goal in this project is trying my hand at showing necessary texture.

September 11th Memorial
Early Thursday morning the UCF Air Force ROTC held a special flag raising ceremony outside of Millican Hall in honor of remembering the Sept. 11th tragedy. This is the second time I've worked with the UCF detachment, and I've enjoyed working with them every time. They are a great group of people and very honorable.
On the court again...
shooting one of my all time favorite UCF sports - Women's Volleyball. I think I've enjoyed the sport since I covered it as sports beat freshman year. On Wednesday night the team played against in-state team Bethune-Cookman, beating them in three games. And oh how I miss Coach Colado...

More HS football
This is the new head coach of Lake Howell Silverhawks, Tom Oliver.
We were walking through the Lake Howell locker room to where the his team was watching film, and on the way there I saw open lockers, lights above, nice space. So we stopped for a quick portrait - and I think it came out alright.

Hail Mary
Today my high school football coverage rolled into a local Baptist church. The church was honoring the local football teams during their Sunday service. I'll never turn down the chance to shoot in a baptist church; the welcoming personalties and uplifting music can't be avoided.
And this is an outtake of two boys sitting in the back and being rambunctious.

High School Football
This past week I've been working on a high school football preview for the 2008 season. These are some of my favorite outtakes from the four Seminole County schools I have been to so far.

The Governator...
Yesterday I went to an assignment with Connecticut's Gov. Jodi Rell making an announcement for funding of furnace replacement for Connecticut residents.
She sent a look my way, I told her "we don't have furnaces in Florida, and I'm not a Connecticut resident. Thank you though."

Don't Let The Kids Know
This is from a road show version of the PBS children's series "Between the Lions." Today the show stopped in Bristol's Imagine Nation Museum, as part of the tour.
If I was a kid, and saw the "puppet masters," I wouldn't be so happy. I decided not to file this image.

Soundslides
This is an attempt at doing a soundslides on deadline; I setup it as my personal goal for the day. I believe it worked. The event was in the morning, and it was ready for publishing around 8 that night.

Summer Camp in Connecticut
So, this is my first blog post, which is exciting. The last few days I've spent some time with the summer campers at Indian Rock Nature Preserve in Bristol.
Turkeys at the farm portion of the preserve.
Ice Cream time with the youngest (Pre-K, 1st Graders) group at the camp.
Learning to board a canoe the right way, without flipping it.
I hope you've enjoyed the joys of summer camps in Connecticut.
*Please pardon the constant changes on the blog, as I am learning to work this blogging thingy...
