When I was in high school (South Plantation, Class 2005), I worked at a European restaurant called Vienna Cafe and Wine Bar, for just over a year. It was my first real job. A very fine restaurant, great classy dishes, moderate prices. One of my co-workers in the kitchen was a good man from Louisiana, named Charlie. He never pronounced Shrimp properly. He made the word his own..."S..Krimppeess"



Friday morning I'm waking up at the crack of dawn, for real, to start a project I'm working on about the St. Johns River. The St. Johns is Jacksonville, Duval County.
The details of the project are private. Consider this a glimmer into it, not even a preview.

Quad Rugby

On Sunday I was assigned to photograph a quad rugby clinic put on by Jacksonville's Brooks Adaptive Sports and Rec Program. The Brooks program manager Alice Krauss invited US paralympic head coach James Gumbert to run the clinic. Gumbert coached the US rugby team to a gold medal in Beijing during the summer paralympics. There was a video that went along with the stills and story. Check out the video at www.Jacksonville.com.
I was actually really proud of the detail.

Remembering a family member...

Although this is something you never want to go to, on Wednesday night I was assigned to go out to a vigil at Edward White High School for three students who were killed in car accident last Friday on Interstate 295.
Three young people, one of which is the older brother of one of the victims, got tattoos to mark the memory of someone they love dearly.

Golden Eagles off to CWS

The city of Hattiesburg, Miss., woke up this morning knowing that their Golden Eagles are off to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Yesterday the team from Mississippi beat the Florida Gators in the Super Regional. First trip to Omaha in the school's history. Here are a few images from the evening in Gainesville.

It is midnight, and I'm still in Gainesville...

and I have work at 10 a.m.

The Florida Gators ended their season tonight losing to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in game two of the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional. Ending my season, sort of.

It has been a fun two weeks hanging in Gator Country. I'll be sure to post some from the Super Regional over the next couple days.

The Gators are everywhere...

I'll be back in Gainesville this weekend covering the NCAA Super Regionals against Southern Mississippi.
Lets see how many "hidden Gators" I can find.

Still in Gainesville

This is from Game 3, on day two of the NCAA Gainesville Regional tournament at McKethan Stadium. Jacksonville beat Bethune-Cookman for a chance to play out of the losers bracket. Jacksonville plays Miami today, winner of that games play Florida tonight.

My ride has begun...

I expected it. I'm three days into my internship and I already feel like I'm fully into the mix of the daily work. Tomorrow is my fourth day of work, and I was asked to travel to nearby Gainesville to photograph the NCAA Baseball Regional games at U. of Florida.

Today I had sometime before my 3:30 assignment, so I mentioned to my editors that I was going to go out and hunt for a feature. As an intern in a new city, searching for features is almost pure luck. I had about an hour and a half to look for one, and being unfamiliar with the city and scared of getting lost on my way to the scheduled assignment, I tried to stay in the neighborhood the assignment was taking place in. For 15 minutes I weaved through the streets lined with good old Florida homes. I took a turn back out to one of the main streets where I found three people bicycling. What caught my eyes were the many bags hanging off their bikes.

Turns out Ryan, Rachel and Gregg Morgan, from Eau Claire, Wis., have been riding cross-county from San Diego, Calif. They started their trip on April 1. Their last stop on the trip was Jacksonville. When they asked me for directions, I told them I have been in the city just about as long as they have.

Bye bye Orlando...

Today was my last day in Orlando. I graduated, on time, from UCF two weeks ago today. Next stop: Florida's first coast - Jacksonville. On Tuesday I start my internship with the Florida Times-Union.
